Capstone Project 1 - Teaching Technique

This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Capstone Project 1 by Arizona State University through Coursera.

Hopefully, you've taken some time to reflect on the questions from Reading 5 and gather your ideas. Using these ideas, write a one to three paragraph description of your teaching techniques.

  • Which techniques do you use in lesson planning or teaching?

  • How much time do you spend teaching and how much time do you spend allowing students to practice language? Why?

  • How do you motivate students on a daily basis?

  • Do you use warm language, teacher talk, language learning strategies, etc? If so, explain how you use them in class.

  • What are some warm up/guided practice/independent practice/assessment activities you use? Explain how you integrate these activities into your lesson plans and how they are beneficial to the students.

  • How do you evaluate and assess students? Why?

TEACHING TECHNIQUE

I use various teaching techniques when I teach my students. Since I am teaching via online, I have to make sure that the students are engaged in the lesson and have to get their attention, show rapport, gauge which level they are in and make them feel comfortable for them to be able to express themselves well throughout the lesson in the first two minutes of the class. After this warm-up, I’d talk about the lesson proper whilst still interacting with the students, always asking if they have any questions or if they understood it and reassuring them that it’s okay to ask questions if they don’t understand anything. To recall what we have learned, I sometimes ask them to answer in a certain way, like answering with an opinion or answering and asking questions back.

Since my classes are more into conversation-type of learning, I have to slowly go through my students sentences and just correct them if what they said are entirely wrong and make them repeat their statements. Another thing that makes them understand a certain grammar rule is through a roleplay and dialogue drill. Most of my lessons with my students are basically just 90% practice and 10% instruction, including the corrections I do when they miss something. At the end of each lesson, I make sure to give my students what they have to work on and what they did correctly in the lesson. That way, they would know which they have to look out for and at the same time encourage them to do better as they are doing well already. I do my assessments in the last part of my lesson where they would be asked to do a speech about a certain statement or a speech about their experiences and dreams.
