Capstone Project 1 - Teaching Purpose

This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Capstone Project 1 by Arizona State University through Coursera.

Hopefully, you’ve taken some time to brainstorm, outline and/or pre-write some ideas for your teaching purpose. Using these ideas, write one to two paragraphs describing your teaching purpose. Be sure that your teaching purpose answers the following questions:

  • Why do you teach OR why do you want to teach (if you're not teaching now)?

  • If you are teaching now, what are your short term goals for teaching? For those who are not currently teaching, what do you think your short term goals for teaching *might* be?

  • If you are teaching now, what are your long term goals for teaching? For those who are not currently teaching, what do you think your long term goals for teaching *might* be?

TEACHING PURPOSE

When I was in college I avoided having a teaching career as much as possible, but after exploring different career paths I figured out that teaching is the right path for me. I found the joy of teaching when I was asked to suddenly teach in an ESL company that I was in before. I thought that teaching will just be one part of my vast work experience but after teaching continuously, the sense of achievement that it gave whenever a student becomes confident in speaking in English and being able to converse with me freely over time was overwhelming. When I teach, I always go back to the memory of one of my first students. I feel a sense of achievement whenever we finish a session as I can see how much she improves every time and how confident she became comparing the first time we met until when it was time for us to part.

My short-term goals for teaching my students now is for them to practice their pronunciation well until they have the neutral accent and for them to be able to grasp which vocabulary to use at certain conversations. My long-term goal is to be able to slowly boost my student’s confidence until they are comfortable enough to hold a conversation with an English speaker. I believe that in language learning, having great confidence is one of the keys to be able to learn effectively and efficiently.
