Capstone Project 1 - Teaching Style

This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Capstone Project 1 by Arizona State University through Coursera.

Hopefully, you've taken some time to reflect on the questions from Reading 3 and draft an outline. Using your outline, write a one to three paragraph description of your teaching style. Reflect on the various teaching approaches discussed in Course 2, and which ones appealed to you the most. As a refresher, these are the questions that you should use to guide you in your writing:

  • Which approaches were the most relatable to you and the way you teach?

  • Why did these approaches appeal to you more than others?

  • Were there specific ideas or aspects from certain approaches that you liked?

  • What were they and why did you like them?

  • Who will you be teaching? Elementary, middle or high school students? University students? Business executives? Etc?

  • How will your teaching style best meet the needs of your students and motivate them to learn?

TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style is deeply rooted in the Communicative Approach. I have always seen that my students need to be equipped with conversational knowledge for them to be able to talk to English speakers. I also had a lot of takeaways from the Affective-Humanistic Approach by building my students’ confidence up so they’ll be able to express themselves more as my Japanese high school students are very shy and they tend to overthink about the words and sentences that were said to them and what they should say back.

From the Comprehension Approach, one of the key takeaways that I mostly do is providing good visual aids and role reversal and from the Direct Approach, I always encourage my students’ self-correction and describing things from a picture. These mainly help me communicate with students’, especially low-level learners. While dramatization and storytelling from the Affective-Humanistic Approach is something that I ask of my high-level learners. Positive reinforcement is one of my cores, as imposing positivity to learners is very important for them to keep on learning and for them to know that they are doing better. While all these styles and takeaways are good, I had to make it authentic and in the present for it to be useful (as taken from the Communicative Approach).
