This is for a peer-graded assignment in the course: Teach English Now! Theories of Second Language Acquisition by Arizona State University through Coursera.
Week 4
Please respond to the following prompts. Each response should be 5-7 sentences.
a. Explain why you agree or disagree with the Cognitive Approach.
Although the Cognitive Approach appears to be the most ideal one, I don’t think that this would do much good with language learners. Honestly, I have been studying English grammar ever since I could talk, and one thing that I always learn in school are the rules of grammar and such. There were so many identification and enumeration types of tests throughout my school years however, I would say that I was more able to learn English through watching various TV shows and movies, reading a lot of English literature and speaking English itself. And even if I have been learning English grammar since I was a kid, I still relearn as it does not retain well.
b. Explain why you agree or disagree with the Affective Humanistic Approach.
Affective Humanistic Approach is one of those student-centric approaches. I think that knowing what students feel at the moment and encouraging them whenever they think that they can’t do it is effective as it boosts morale. I think that if learners are encouraged enough and they are comfortable in the environment of your class, they’ll be able to learn more. One thing that gives this approach the advantage is the creativity of using different contents for learners to have fun with. It is always easier to learn when you feel light and you are actually enjoying what you are learning.
c. What techniques can you apply in your classroom that align with your preferred approach?
I usually gauge my students’ learning level through doing small talks at first. Here is when I know if they are nervous or not confident in speaking the language. If they are, a little encouragement surely does a lot to boost their morale. After gauging the learning level, then we’ll get to the different ways that students can enjoy learning language, like using visual aids and telling stories as well as involving them in the stories as you tell them. At times, I can also use the Cognitive Approach by incorporating the rules of grammar as a game to the learners. This way, they wouldn’t think that it is too stressful to learn or it is hard to understand because they’ll enjoy learning them in a carefree environment where it is okay to make mistakes and correct yourself as the lesson goes on.
