This is for a peer-graded assignment in the course: Teach English Now! Theories of Second Language Acquisition by Arizona State University through Coursera.
Week 5
Please respond to the following prompts. Each response should be 5-7 sentences.
a. Discuss the differences between the Comprehension Approach and the Communicative Approach.
In the general context, the Comprehension Approach and the Communicative Approach are quite similar. Since the Communicative Approach is not limited to one technique or content, it may actually use the Comprehension Approach if the learner requires it. Also, lowering the stress level of students, which is a high objective of the Comprehension Approach, is one of the things that teachers should do when they tend to learners who needs this type of approach (which is one of the principles of Communicative Approach - to tend to learner’s need in his/her own level).
One difference between these two is the purpose of its approaches, the Comprehension Approach’s purpose is for learners to learn just for the joy of learning while the Communicative Approach’s purpose is for learners to be able to communicate with other people with different cultures.
b. Which approach most closely aligns with your current teaching style?
I would say that in today’s language teaching, the Communicative Approach is the most used and is sometimes required. Of course, nowadays, not only do students need to learn a language just because of its academic value but also for them to effectively communicate with other people and for them to exist and participate globally. I think that when the student and the teacher have that kind of mindset, that students need to learn a language and teachers need to teach a language due to globalization, it wouldn’t give much stress. It’s just the general goal of language learning and sometimes we need to look at it on a big scale for us to know how to approach it on a smaller scale and keep in mind of the main objective and that is for people to communicate.
