Capstone 1 - Teacher's Toolbox

This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Capstone Project 1 by Arizona State University through Coursera. 


Teacher’s Toolbox - Human Bingo


Objective: To help students get to know each other and know how to interact and start conversation in real life. The human bingo will feature questions that will be answered by sentences in the simple past, simple present and simple future.


Materials: Students are given a bingo card that contains the keyword for their question. They will also have to record their classmates’ answers and will need a pen to jot down notes.


Procedure:

  1. Key phrases for questions and answers will be put up by the teacher.

    1. Questions Key-Phrases

      2. Are you…?

      3. When do/did/will you…?

      4. What are/were/will you…

      5. Where do/did/will you….?

    2. Answer Key-Phrases

      1. I am/were…

      2. I like…

      3. Yesterday / last night / last weekend

      4. Today / Tonight / This morning / This evening

      5. Tomorrow / Next week / next year

      6. At the mall / at the restaurant / at home

  2. Each student will be given a bingo card with words to ask their fellow classmates. Students will have 5 minutes to write down their possible questions and make sure that it will make sense. The teacher will have to go around and look at the students questions while they are doing it.

  1. After 5 minutes of preparation, the students will stand up and ask their classmates a question each. They should take note of their classmate’s answers (who answered it and the answer that was given). Students will have 15 minutes to complete their bingo.

  2. After the human bingo activity, students will record their activity questions and classmates’ answers in their journal for checking.



** I have derived the original concept of human bingo. This is usually done in team building and acquaintance parties, and usually participants would just look for people who have the thing on their bingo cards. However, I changed it and made it more educational and interesting for those who are beginners in learning English. This will also help them have practice in real-time conversations.
