Required Reading - Lesson Plan

 This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Reading, Writing & Grammar by Arizona State University through Coursera.

Based on the reading you have chosen, create a lesson plan that follows the template attached. Make sure that you choose activities that demonstrate both intensive and extensive techniques.

Lesson Plan (Intermediate)


**the news article to be used: Space Exploration - ESL Lesson Plan - Breaking News English Lesson

 

Lesson Objective:

  • Students will be able to learn and use new vocabularies on their own.

  • Students will be able to fill in the reading outline and summarize the news article that will be presented in class.

  • Students will be able to write 5 questions regarding the reading material for further discussion.

  • Students will be able to research a news article and summarize it on their own.

 

Warm-Activity

  • T will ask S what they know about space and will list key vocabularies as S mentions them.

  • T will also list vocabularies that were missed and discuss what it means in class.

  • T will give S time to create at least 3 sentences using the new vocabularies that were discussed.

 

Objective Discussion

  • After the vocabulary discussion, T will introduce the reading material for the day.

  • Explain that in this lesson, S will fill in a reading outline and will summarize the reading material

  • Explain how the S will fill in the reading outline and how to make a summary out of it.

  • Explain that in this lesson, they will also be writing 5 questions that are related to the reading material for further discussion.

  • Explain that for their independent practice, they will have to search for news articles of their own and provide summaries for it.

 

Instruct & Model / Guided Practice

  • T will present the reading outline that S will work on.

  • T will present the reading material and will ask students to read them one after another.

  • After reading, T will open the floor for questions and will ask S to start filling in their outlines. 15 minutes will be allotted for this. The class will have discussion about their outlines afterwards as S will share the main topics and subtopics that they have found in the reading.

  • T will again give 10 minutes to students as they write their 5 intriguing questions. This will be discussed in the class too

Independent Practice

  • T will ask S to look for a news article on the internet and provide their own reading outline and summaries for it.

  • Students will add this to their journal/blog, including the link for the news article that they have searched for.
