This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Reading, Writing & Grammar by Arizona State University through Coursera.
Think about students you are currently teaching or *might* teach in the future. Choose a reading you think will interest your learners. Be sure to consider your students' reading abilities in relation to the difficulty of the text you choose. Do you want to choose a fiction or non-fiction reading? Consider the various types of readings you could choose: a news article, a short story, a chapter from a novel (for more advanced readers), a historical poem, etc. Then, note the following information for this assignment:
What is the age of the students you are planning this reading for?
Describe your students' language proficiency.
List the title and author of the reading.
Discuss why you think this reading would be appropriate for your learners.
My students would most likely be teenagers, ranging from junior to senior high schoolers. Language proficiency will be from basic to intermediate. Some may only be beginning to truly understand English and some may already be proficient at it. Versatility would be the key to tend to all of the students and give a reading and activity that best suit their level as seen in a diagnostic quiz at the start of the term.
The reading materials that I choose for them are news articles from Breaking News English Lesson website, where it features different and relevant articles that may range from different levels. I will use news articles to keep them up-to-date in what is happening in the world, whether it be current news, scientific discovery or technology news. As they are already high school students, they would definitely be more interested in what is going on around them.
