This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Technnology Enriched Teaching by Arizona State University through Coursera.
In the last module, you completed a technology evaluation and reviewed other learners' technology evaluations. Hopefully you discovered some new technology tools in the process! Now we'd like for you to think about one of those technology tools in terms of how you might use it in the classroom.
Link to the technology that I'd be using - Kahoot!
In this module, you learned about nine categories of technology (in Video 4.) Which category would your technology tool fall into? (If it would fall into multiple categories, please list them.)In the 9 categories of technology, this tool will fall into:
- Instructional Interactivity
- since the tool keeps a real-time tally of scores amongst the participants - not only for correct answers but for their speed too, this is will serve as a good and friendly competition among everyone.
- Survey Tools
- teachers can also use this as a survey tool to determine the participants' understanding of previous lessons.
- teachers can distinguish those top learners and can give them an opportunity to assist low-score learners.
In the Gagne's 6 events of instructions, this tool can be used in:
- Stimulating background knowledge
- this activity can help learners remember what they have learned in a fun way. quizzes and tests masked in a fun game will make learners engage more, especially if it's presented in a good way.
- Practice and collaboration
- learners will be able to retain what they have learned and remember which questions or topics did they make a mistake on - teachers just have to remember to put ample transition time between questions (or teachers can also reiterate the answer if it shows that more participants got it wrong)
I. Give a brief instructions on how to use Kahoot!, give them the link for the room and do some fun popular, practice questions like:
- Which Kardashian is Kanye West married to?
- How many members did One Direction have?
- Which prince is next in line in the British throne?
- How many dragons does Khaleesi originally have?
II. After they get acquainted with it, give the link for the warm-up question for today's class. Set the deck for 1-minute intervals. At the end of the warm-up activity, go back to the questions that a lot of people missed, discuss the bullet.
III. After the topic proper of the day, give students another Kahoot! link, and this time set the deck for at least 3-minute intervals to discuss what they miss every time.
IV. Since Kahoot! has a very user-friendly and fun interface, some learners may want to try creating decks themselves - this can be the reward for the top scorers.
