Technology Evaluation - Engaging Students

This is for a writing prompt in the course: Teach English Now! Technnology Enriched Teaching by Arizona State University through Coursera.

In the last module, you thought about how you might use a specific technology tool in one of your lessons. Now, think about how you can engage students (digital natives and non-natives) in the classroom.

Link to the technology that I'd be using - Kahoot!

  1. Please give a brief description of how you would use the technology tool that you selected in one of your lessons.

  2. What are some challenges that your students might have in working with this tool?

  3. How would you deal with multi-levels (a combination of digital natives and non-natives) using this tool in the same class?

1. I would be using Kahoot! for my Warm-Up Activity. As I have said in my previous entry, this tool can bring in a friendly competition for the whole class - at the same time it can help develop retention of information for students (through going through the same questions a few times). This can also determine the students' levels of understanding and if it's enough to proceed to another topic.

2. Some challenges might occur if there's any technical difficulties with the students' devices, that non-natives might find intimidating. The teacher should see to it that everyone has access to the Kahoot! game link, and that everyone have buttons to press to choose the answer.

3. Kahoot is played with the teacher's screen up where everyone can see and the students will just type in the game code in their browsers to be able to join in. The teacher's screen will be the main screen for everyone as it will present both the questions and the answers - while in the students' devices, there will only be buttons that they should press for their choice of answers.

The mechanics of how to use Kahoot! is one of the reasons why I chose this as my technology tool. The technology will be centralized to the teacher while the students would only choose a button to press - easy enough for digital non-natives and fun enough for digital natives.
